Beer Spa- Budapest

Address: Budapest, Állatkerti krt. 9-11, 1146 Hungary

When I say the word “relaxation” I bet that the first place your imagination will transport you to is an image of yourself relaxing in a spa. Now what if I told you that you can have that fantasy AND add beer to it!

Mari and I were able to try this experience while we were on holiday in Budapest; while this was the second Beer Spa in the world (the first starting up in Prague) it was one amazing experience.

According to the website: *Our ancestors were already familiar with the benefits of the natural beer ingredients before modern society contemplated bathing in it. Nowadays, women will often hear the benefits of giving their hair a beer rinse to ensure vitality and shine.

Even ancient Egyptians enjoyed the natural extract’s impact on the skin. We know that the tradition of brewing beer goes back until the middle-ages in Europe, which is when they started to brew beer as we know it today. This recipe of beer is exceptionally rich in vitamins and minerals.

We pour fresh 36 degree water into the tubs, along with a bowl of the natural extracts of beer. This mixture includes malt, hops and yeast; all of which are extremely high in B vitamins, oils and other healthy contents! The tubs are emptied and cleaned in between sessions so you can rest assured knowing you have your own fresh water to bathe in.

Your body will definitely thank you for this treat! The water mixture helps to rejuvenate your skin, reduce the appearence of acne and cellulite, and cleans your pores. It provides vitamins, sugars and proteins that help your body release muscle tension. It also reduces stress, improves blood circulation and eliminates damaging substances as well as increasing heart activity.

If you need to cure a hangover, ease fatigue or you just wish to treat yourself, a beer bath is the perfect choice.

They also claim that: **The beer spa contains many ingredients that have been used in medicine since ancient times. Guests bathe in the natural extracts used to brew Czech Krušovice® beer: brewer’s yeast, selected varieties of Žatec hops, malt and the beer itself. The high content of hop oils helps open pores and contributes to overall vitality; the high doses of vitamin B and active enzymes in brewer’s yeast have a salutary effect on skin regeneration. This unique combination of natural ingredients and the magical effect of royal oak, for ages a symbol of longevity and immunity, stimulate metabolism, help remove harmful substances from the body and ease fatigue and stress, thus resulting in ideal mental and physical relaxation.

So along with what they stated above, they claim that the benefits of getting into the tub are: **skin rejuvenation, absorption of vitamins, carbohydrates and proteins, soothing effect on the skin, hair and muscles, easing of muscle tension, reduction of stress, regeneration of the body and mind, improved blood circulation, detoxification – the removal of harmful substances from the body, treatment of back and joint pain, cleansing of pores, increased cardio activity & treatment of psoriasis, acne and cellulite.

And the following are from the website in regards to the ingredients used in the tub: **CZECH BREWER’S YEAST, which has been used for curative purposes since ancient times, has a long tradition in Czech medicine. Brewer’s yeast provides essential B vitamins, carbohydrates, proteins and contributes to the overall regeneration of our skin, in warm water opening skin pores and hence removing harmful substances from the body (an effect similar system to saunas). Scientists concur that brewer’s yeast contains more vitamins, trace elements and amino acids than previously thought. Brewer’s yeast is a fantastic source of nourishment for the skin, smoothing wrinkles and providing overall skin hydration.

Brewer’s yeast is also one of the richest sources of organic iron, essential amino acids, unsaturated fatty acids, phosphatides, sterols, glycides, enzymes and other bioactive nutrients. It is a rich source of B vitamins, including pangamic acid – vitamin B15, minerals (e.g. calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, sodium) and trace elements (iron, iodine, copper, zinc and manganese). Brewer’s yeast helps to heal inflammation of the liver and is ideal for increased physical and mental exercise and sport. The B vitamins found in brewer’s yeast promote digestion and metabolism and help in the treatment of chronic arthritis and cardiovascular disease. They assist in the regeneration of intestinal microflora, which are essential for maintaining a strong immune system.

In addition to a small amount of alcohol, Czech Krušovice® beer contains beneficial substances such as vitamins (thiamine and riboflavin), folic acid, carbohydrates and proteins. Drinking beer during the beer spa promotes mental relaxation.

CZECH ŽATEC HOPS are an herb which, when added to the bath, produce a strong energizing effect, contribute to overall regeneration and uniquely complement the effects of brewer’s yeast. Hops dissolved in the beer bath release aromatic oils that provide a pleasant aroma. Women can use hops during the bath as a highly effective natural peeling.

While we were there they showed us the four ingredients that would be joining Mari and I in the bubbling hot tub. From the top left corner clockwise we have beer battered bath salts, a weizen (wheat) malt mash, a top fermenting ale yeast (typically Saccharomyces cerevisiae) & finally citra hops; before hopping in I had asked about all the ingredients that were going into the tub & these are the what the manager had told me. Which is perfect because (minus the salts) these are all the ingredients you NEED to produce beer: malt, hops, yeast & water.

And what was even cooler than being able to relax in the ingredients that beer is made was the fact that we got to drink beer too! And no, we didn’t drink the water in the tub, but right next to our tub was a keg and tap filled with Primator Pivovar (Czech Pilsner, 5.0% ABV) which is from a Czech craft brewery and was a nice crisp, easy drinking beer that you’d be able to throw back one after the other while you’re body was unwinding in the tub.

We were also treated to some toast that had duck fat, paprika, and salt and actually paired great with the lager. And even better was the fact that after all the Pilsner we had been drinking, we finished the soak with a stout that was delicious as well and had roasted malt notes, slight coffee and dark chocolate notes as well.

We were talking with the manager of operations at the Beer Spa and they’re starting an experience where every Tuesday and Thursday you jump into a hot tub and they do beer tastings along with your soak! Stay tuned for more details about that.

All in all it was an amazing experience and I can’t wait to go back and do it again.
