Khoffner Brewery USA

Address: 1110 NE 8 Avenue, Ft Lauderdale, FL 33304

While we were in Ft. Lauderdale this past week, (eatingwithlittlemariii) and I needed to give some local love and check out a brewery before we went to our show. And Marilyn stumbled upon this little hid away gem known as Khoffner Brewery USA!

Legit a little hole in the wall in a stripmall-esque neighborhood/business district, you wouldn’t find this place unless you lived in the neighborhood or if you looked them up online; but I am so glad we did!

Their motto is “Beer is in our blood” and that statement is nothing but true!  Rauf Khoffner is the owner and head brew master and brewing beer is in his blood. He’s a third generation brewer following his grandfather, Karl Hoffner’s footsteps, who left Germany in 1933 to brew German-styled beers in Turkey. He is proudly reviving and using recipes dating back to more than 100 years; and when he’s not brewing traditional beers honoring the Reinheitsgebot, he remains true to his German roots of producing balanced, smooth and drinkable beers only with authentic and high-quality ingredients. He opened the first Khoffner craft breweries in Antalya, Turkey in 2008 and recently brought his passion to the United States to open the third Khoffner craft brewery in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl.

When we went we were greeted by a lovely staff in this small, hole in the wall brewery that packs a BIG punch.

They typically have 16 BEERS ON TAP!!! And none of those are guest beers, those are all brewed in house! But while we were there they ran out of two of them (and I really wanted to try that Russian Imperial Stout).

Here are the explanations from the brewery:

Dark:

Reserved- Raspberry Chocolate Stout (6% Alc/ 40 IBU): Very dark, semi-sweet, full-bodied, creamy and rich stout with pure flavor of double roasted chocolate nibs from Ecuador, and gentle sourness of fresh organic raspberry in aftertaste.
Tasting Notes
Malty, Toffee, Chocolaty, Toasty, Medium-bodied
Food Pairings
Poultry, Seafood, Sharp Cheeses, Mushrooms.

Mr Bean- Vanilla Milk Stout (7.5% Alc/ 29 IBU): With a deep brown body and a creamy tan head, our famous milk stout is sweeter than dry Stouts or an Oatmeal Stout. Dark roasted grains provide the color and Stout-like chocolate, coffee and caramel aroma and flavor, while a balancing sweetness from the lactose, with low to moderate hop bitterness rounding out the mix. The mouth-feel is generally creamy, silky and full. This is a great great dessert beer.
Tasting Notes
Malty, Sweet, Rich, Chocolaty, Caramel, Full-bodied
Food Pairings
Beef barbecue, spicy Asian dishes, chocolatety desserts.

Kremlin Wolf- Russian Imperial Stout (7% Alc/ 50 IBU): A beautiful deep dark brown in color, Russian Romance expresses complexities of aroma and flavor due to the high alcohol and abundance of malt and hop character. Characteristics including a smooth, full mouth-feel delivering rich malts evoke chocolaty, coffee, caramel, toasty, roasty and burnt aromas and flavors. Esters of dark fruits are often present, providing balance to the malts, along with sufficient hop bitterness to tame the sweetness. Perfect for cellar-aging and will evolve in character over time.
Tasting Notes
Balanced, Rich, Malty, Dark Fruit, Full-bodied
Food Pairings
Smoked meat and Poultry, rich deserts.

The Noble Breakfast- Oatmeal Coffee Stout (6% Alc/ 35 IBU): No Description Available

Rauchweisen (5.5% Alc/ 25 IBU): No Description Available

Ales:

Flagler Citra- Citrus IPA (5% Alc/ 62 IBU): Historically, IPA was brewed to survive a voyage from England to India. The temperature extremes and rolling of the seas resulted in a highly attenuated beer upon arrival.
Our Flagler Citrus Ale was created for people who like mildly hopped IPAs. The hop varietals take fruity, citrusy, floral aromas and flavors. We add locally sourced red grapefruits and Valencia oranges to make refreshing, balanced and drinkable beer.
Tasting Notes
Hoppy, Citrusy, Piney, Spicy, Medium-bodied
Food Pairings
Blackened chicken, spicy dishes and shellfish

French Biscuit- Seasonal Pumpkin Rye Ale (6.5% Alc/ 29 IBU): One of our most popular seasonal beers, this is a lager brewed with fresh pumpkin and spices typically found in pumpkin pie, like cinnamon and clove. However, these flavors do not overpower the taste. A great Beer to accompany Roast Turkey
Tasting Notes
Malty, Sweet, Chocolaty, Caramel, Full-bodied
Food Pairings
Roast meat and poultry, dark chocolate.

Cream Head- American Cream Ale (5.5% Alc/25 IBU): We use an American ale yeast strain which displays notes of lemon, we also add a touch of lemongrass giving a fresh clean, refreshing taste. Their color varies from straw to light amber, and they are often a summer seasonal release, delivering crisp, wheat-like, citrusy, bready and light-bodied aromas and flavors.
Tasting Notes
Crisp, Wheat, Citrusy, Bready, Light-bodied
Food Pairings
Beef, barbecue, spicy Indian & Asian dishes, light citrus desserts.

The Crown- English Brown Ale (5% Alc/ 26 IBU): With a deep brown body and a creamy tan head, our famous milk stout is sweeter than dry Stouts or an Oatmeal Stout. Dark roasted grains provide the color and Stout-like chocolate, coffee and caramel aroma and flavor, while a balancing sweetness from the lactose, with moderate hop bitterness rounding out the mix. The mouth-feel is generally creamy, silky and full. This is a great great dessert beer.
Tasting Notes
Malty, Sweet, Chocolaty, Caramel, Full-bodied
Food Pairings
Beef barbecue, spicy Asian dishes, chocolatety desserts.

Triple Candy- Belgian Style tripel (8% Alc/ 35 IBU): This is our take on a Belgian Tripel. Tripels are brewed with Belgian-style yeast contributing a spicy, clove-like aroma with citrusy and floral notes. They are generally effervescent with a long-lasting, dense white head. We brewed ours with Pilsner and Carapils malts, as well as Hallertau and Saaz hops. Enjoy!
Tasting Notes
Malty, Toasty, Caramel, Toffee, Medium-bodied
Food Pairings
Cajun, Crab Cakes, Sharp Cheddar, Gorgonzola, Triple Crème Cheeses, Pork, Pheasant, Roast Turkey, Nutty Desserts

Belgian Dubbel: No Description Available

Pomegranate IPA (6.5% Alc/ 76 IBU): No Description Available

Lagers:

Vollbier- Munich Style Pilsner (5% Alc/ 19 IBU ):  This light-bodied, gold-colored lager is a relative of Bohemian Pilsner adapted to brewing conditions in Germany. Crisp, clean and refreshing beer, showing excellent head retention and elegant floral hop aroma. First brewed in the early 1870s. A beer for the people, by the people! Balanced with a rich, bready malt aroma, the flavor of this beer is complex yet refreshing.
Tasting Notes
Golden, sharp, full of colors, with high foaminess and lighter flavour
Food Pairings
Lamb, light fish dishes, French onion soup, roast beef and barbecue.

Frau Von Stein- German Helles Lager (5.5% Alc/ 21 IBU): The lightest of the European lagers, this Munich-style beer was made to counter the bitter pilsners coming from Northern Germany and the Czech Republic. Lux has a clean aroma with just a touch of grassy hops leading to a sweet, toasty malt flavor. This sustains to a crisp finish with just a hint of noble hop aroma. This beer defines refreshing!
Tasting Notes
Full-bodied, bready. Slighty sweet, Hint of hop spiciness. Clean, crisp, refreshing.
Food Pairings
Cheese (Brie, Gouda, Havarti, Swiss) Pork, Fish, Shellfish

Oktobeerfest- Dunkle Fest Lager (6% Alc/ 26 IBU): Dark brown in color, with a creamy head, Our Munich Brown Lager features prominent malty aromas and flavors with only moderate hop bitterness. A classic example using dark Munich malt and displaying a bready character on the nose and palate, along with mild chocolate, nut and toast notes..
Tasting Notes
Malty, Sweet, Chocolaty, Caramel, Full-bodied
Food Pairings
Beef barbecue, spicy Asian dishes, chocolatety desserts.

Riot Blood- Irish Red Lager (6% Alc/25 IBU): Our Irish Red Ale comes with a notable dash of roasted barley — used for centuries in Ireland’s Porters and Stouts — giving the beer its reddish hue and a dry roasted finish. This malt showcase has a very low hop influence in aroma, flavor and bitterness, which leaves the malty-sweet caramel and toffee notes to shine, often along with some toasty character.
Tasting Notes
Malty, Toasty, Caramel, Toffee, Medium-bodied
Food Pairings
Lamb, light fish dishes, French onion soup, roast beef and barbecue.

Helles Boch (6% Alc/ 27 IBU): No Description Available

Here’s what I thought:

Dark:

Reserved- Raspberry Chocolate Stout: Was not able to try.

Mr Bean- Vanilla Milk Stout: a slightly creamy, full bodied stout. You can taste the vanilla notes. Delicious.

The Noble Breakfast- Oatmeal Coffee Stout: Taste just like coffee. Bitter, creamy, a full bodied stout. Loved this one.

Kremlin Wolf- Russian Imperial Stout: Was not able to try.

The Rauchweisen: Smoky, great aftertaste. Tastes like you’re biting into a juicy piece of crisp bacon.

Ales:

Flagler Citra- Citrus IPA: Hoppy, but not overbearing. Light, crisp and leaves a hoppy slightly citrus/bitter aftertaste.

French Biscuit- Seasonal Pumpkin Rye Ale: Was not able to try.

Cream Head- American Cream Ale: As the name implies, creamy. light, refreshing, washes over your pallet.

The Crown- English Brown Ale: Light, malty, a bit creamy with a nice finish.

Triple Candy- Belgian Style Tripel: Was not able to try.

Belgian Dubbel: Was a lighter belgian, not as malty, sips smooth.

Irma IPA: Super hoppy, Citrusy, slight mango aftertaste.

Pomegranate IPA:  Loved this IPA. Made me smack my lips! Hoppy, but not overbearing, light and crisp, slight citrus/bitter aftertaste.

Berliner Weisse: Light, crisp, refreshing, not overbearing

Hefeweizen: Tart, light, crisp, not too sweet at all.

Lagers:

Vollbier- Munich Style Pilsner: This was a true pilsner, light, malty but not overbearing. Kind of like a bud light.

Frau Von Stein: Was not able to try.

Oktobeerfest- Dunkle Fest Lager: Not your usual dunkle. Not as dark, lighter in taste, not overbearing with the pumpkin flavor.

Riot Blood- Irish Red Lager: Crisp, not too malty, light, refreshing.

Helles Boch: Was not able to try.

So all in all with the food they offered (food truck that comes and parks up outside), ambiance of the brewery, the service from the staff and the beers we were served I would give Khoffner Brewery USA 5 out of 5 piggys!
